What is Male Menopause?

What is Male Menopause?

Male menopause (also called andropause or manopause) is the name physicians are giving to the cluster of symptoms caused by declining Testosterone levels that some men experience as they age.

These include low energy, excessive sweating, decrease in strength, low libido, waist and stomach weight gain, and slower sexual response.

Some physicians questions the term, because unlike women, men can continue to reproduce into old age, but the idea of andropause is nevertheless gaining wide acceptance.

Many men will progress through to old age without noticing any drastic hormonal (or emotional) change, but approximately 40 percent of men aged 40 to 60 experience andropause symptoms.

According to Dr Graeme Williams, an Australian specialist in andropause, as testosterone decreases, estrogen increases, causing a hormone imbalance which accelerates a man's midlife weight gain, abdominal bloating and breast development.

Midlife Crisis Not the Same as Male Menopause

Having a "midlife crisis" is not the same as male menopause. A midlife crisis reflects a man's sense of losing touch with who he is, and questioning his life's path and purpose, with underlying deeper emotional and spiritual questions of identity and significance.

While it may be affected by the physical symptoms of aging it is a much more comprehensive re-assessment of personal purpose and meaning.

Entering the second half of your life you may take stock and may feel you have not achieved what you had hoped. The years of dedication to career and family have not given you what you had hoped.

US expert Jed Diamond has described a condition he dubbed Irritable Male Syndrome, caused by a mix of hormonal changes and life stresses, which add up to the stereotypical Grumpy Old Man – angry, depressed, and very difficult to live with.

What Can I Do About Male Menopause?

There are many steps you can take to improve your health and attitude to deal with declining Testosterone levels.

  • Eat a nutritious and low fat diet
  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Exercise regularly and lose weight – excess weight seems to "lock up" Testosterone.
  • Limit alcohol and coffee consumption
  • Sex is still important but regards it as just part of a relationship which also includes love, friendship, intimacy and sharing
  • Get relaxation breaks and learn to manage your stress levels

Testosterone Replacement Therapy

Testosterone replacement therapy is one option for men who are suffering from the low testosterone levels associated with male menopause. Pop singer Robbie Williams has talked publicly about getting Testosterone treatment at the age of 38.

There are risks involved so in some quarters it is considered controversial. Before commencing treatment your doctor should do a complete medical check-up, including a rectal examination, liver function tests and PSA tests, and these tests should be repeated at 3-6 month intervals as long as treatment is continued.

Testosterone replacement is available in many forms – oral, transdermal, and implants, or as bio-identical hormones.

Risks of Testosterone Replacement Therapy

Testosterone injections, while reducing andropause symptoms, may also:
  • Increase stroke risk
  • Cause liver toxicity
  • Cause Heart Disease – have serum cholesterol levels evaluated and rechecked periodically
  • Cause Prostate Cancer – take a PSA test annually to detect early

Bio-identical creams are a less invasive form of Testosterone replacement.

Alternative Treatments for Male Menopause

Thousands of men and women are discovering the benefits of male enhancement pills like Tribulus Terrestris, Horny Goat Weed, and Avena Sativa in erectile dysfunction treatments like Herbal Ignite.

However do not expect these natural products to work as quickly as pharmaceuticals. Herbal sex pills work a little slower, and while herbals may take a few days to work, they often provide additional benefits like increasing libido and sex enhancement.
